Naming of the OpenMU Project

Some of you might have noticed, that there is a private MU Online Server "OpenMu" and maybe several other (dead) projects with a similar naming. I want to clarify that my "OpenMU" project is not connected in any way to any other existing (and previously existing) project or private MU Online server. I even wonder which attributes of these projects/servers make them "open" in any way.

As far as I could find out, the name "OpenMU" (in this specific character casing) is not in use, so I have chosen it. I think it's "open" because of the following facts:

  • Every piece of code is open source and actually created by me (or other members of MUnique in the future).
  • It has a very permissive license (MIT).
  • Every framework or library that it uses, is open source as well
  • Therefore: It doesn't contain any foreign binaries with unclear licensing.
  • It's easy to extend and easy to build with free tools
  • It should be possible to run the server on linux (by Mono and later .NET Core)
What about "MUnique"?

I have thought a lot about a meaningful and elegant name and somehow got lucky the .net-domain was still free. It's a mixture of "MU" and "unique". Additionally, I studied in Munich - "Munique" is it's Portuguese name.
